Apostille is a French term; meaning – Certification

What is Apostille Authentification:

It is a process of authenticating genuineness of personal documents or certificates like birth/ death/ marriage certificates, affidavits, power of attorney etc and educational certificate or documents like degree/ diploma and matriculation etc). Generally it required for processing visas like employment, study, au pair etc.

Apostille Attestation can be used only among the parties or member countries of the Hague Convention Treaty and there are about 105 countries part of this convention. This convention aimed to abolish requirements of legalization (attestation) of certificates by their concerned Embassies or High Commissions; instead, these countries accept the Apostille Attestation, which will be done by a government agency of the certificate holder’s home country.

India is a member of the Hague Convention. The Officials of the Ministry of External Affairs, India shall attend for and on behalf of these 104 nations Ministry of External Affairs is responsible for Attestation and Apostille of documents for use in those countries abroad.

Apostille Procedure:

Step 1): Authentication of certificate by the designated agencies in the State from where the document has been issued. In case of personal documents, Home Department is the designated authority from the respective state.

Step 2): Apostille Attestation by Ministry of External Affairs –

Fee details: Rs. 50/- by means of Postal Order drawn in favour of PAO, MEA, New Delhi, for each Apostille sticker/attestation.

Important Note: Apostille is performed only on original documents and not on photocopies.
